First off, can you let everyone know who you are and where you’re from?
Firstly, thanks for chatting with me guys! My name is James Clav and I am from Athlone, Ireland.
How long have you been DJ’ing and how did you get into it?
I’ve been Djing for 4 years, which all started after my 18th birthday in October 2019. My mate had some speakers, a microphone and a laptop which he was playing Spotify on- not even decks! I was joking about on the microphone, hyping everyone up and really enjoyed it. That Christmas I didn’t know what I wanted from Santa so I asked for the “Hercules Inpulse 200s” and some small speakers. The rest is history!
Where and when did you first DJ on the mountain?
My first gig in the mountains was Klub Summit , in Val Thorens, the 24th November 2021. So a quick turnover from the Inpulse 200s back in 2019!
How is playing up a mountain different to playing in a city and how do the crowds compare?
You have to be ready! In a city you’re usually just playing for that cities nationality and of course a small mix too, but who are usually accustomed to the areas “sound”. In the mountains there are multiple nationalities all expecting to hear their own favourite genres. Don’t get me wrong, this makes my sets a lot more fun and creative, and it has also helped me to drastically improve in a short space of time!
Whats been your best set to date? This can be because of the crowd, the location etc
Ohhh, stuck between two sets here! One, being my 2 hour closing set at Tomorowland Winter 2023, on the VUSE stage. This was a really intimate setting, with minimum separation from myself and the crowd, and everyone in the crowd were just vibes!
The other set being at 360 Val Thorens playing B2B during Irish week, with my good friend, Silque. 1200 Irish people having it 2400m up the mountain is always a good time!
Do you ski or snowboard and how many days a week do you get on the slopes?
I ski! Peak season I probably get out 2/3 times a week. Not as much as I’d like to but that’s the result of being booked and busy, so I can’t complain! Definitely get out on the slopes more in Spring!
Favourite thing about living on the mountain?
The people and the culture for sure! Everyone is so nice and like-minded, I’ve made friends for life from all over the globe!
Any advice for anyone wanting to do a season?
Just do it! As I mentioned before, everyone is so like-minded and if it’s your first season, you are not the only one! You will make friends in your first 30 minutes in resort. Just be sociable and put yourself out there!
Finally, what does the future hold for you? Whats the dream?
You can definitely expect a lot more music from me in the coming months. The dream is to turn this passion into my full time gig and start touring!
